state-police-seal-150x150Oneida-based state police were dispatched to a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of state Routes 5 and 26 in the town of Vernon at approximately 3:05 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The accident investigation revealed that a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu operated by Nicole R. Cameron, 40, of Bronx, was southbound on Route 26 stopped for a red light at Route 5 and a 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck operated by Frank Ruggireo, II, 28, of Solvay, was northbound on Route 26 stopped at the same red light.

When the light turned green, the Cameron vehicle started southbound through the intersection and was struck on the driver’s side by a westbound 2008 Ford Focus operated by Patricia A. Mettelman, 63, of Clinton, which had failed to stop for the red light.

The force of the impact spun the Chevrolet counterclockwise across the intersection where it struck the front of the Ruggireo vehicle. A passenger in the Cameron vehicle, Jazmyne Payne, 26, of Brooklyn, was transported by Vineall Ambulance to Oneida Healthcare Center with arm pain.

No other injuries were reported.

Mettelman was issued a traffic ticket for failure to stop for a red light and is scheduled to appear in Vernon Town Court Aug. 26.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Vernon Fire Department EMS and fire police personnel.
