unnamedHighlights Need For Skilled Labor and Training

This week, candidate for Congress Kim Myers toured the International Paper plant in Broome County. The box manufacturing facility in Conklin employees about 160 people.

“One of the best experiences of running for Congress is the opportunities I have had to visit and tour businesses like IP,” Myers said. “Talking to the employees and hearing about their issues, successes and challenges reinforces my commitment and faith in our area.”

The International Paper plant faces a shortage of skilled labor in the near future. 25% of their Conklin workforce will retire within the next 6 years, nationally 50% within 10 years. “The situation is a win-win,” says Myers. “We need to identify the necessary skill sets of current and future businesses with our schools and educational institutions to create a labor force that will grow and attract new business and jobs.”
