On Saturday October 1st starting at 10:00 am the Erieville Nelson Heritage Society will host a cemetery tour.  Leaving from the Town of Nelson building attendees will visit Bliss Cemetery, Tog Hill Cemetery, Westcott Cemetery and Payne Cemetery.  Attendees are responsible for their own transportation between cemeteries.  Attendees are encouraged to wear long pants and bring sturdy boots or sneakers, as well as water and/or snacks.  For more information please contact Sonia Davies at 315-655-3298.

On Saturday October 1st from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm the Oneida Community Mansion House will host a special tour entitled “Sherrill Manufacturing’s Liberty Tabletop Tour.”  Get a special behind the scene tour for a first-hand glimpse of American’s only silverware manufacturers, Sherrill Manufacturing’s Liberty Tabletop.  Guests will meet at the Mansion House prior to the tour.  Admission is $5 for members, $7 for non-members, and students are $3.  For more information please visit http://www.oneidacommunity.org/.

On Saturday October 1st at 1:00 pm the Oneida County Historical Society will host a special free screening of the film “In God’s House:  The Religious Landscape of Utica, NY .  This documentary focuses on religion and immigration in central New York focusing on the sacred places in Utica, NY.  Film director Robert Knight will introduce the film and be available for questions following the screening.  There is no charge for this event, although donations are encouraged.  For more information please call 315-735-3642 or visit www.oneidacountyhistory.org.

On Saturday October 1st at 5:30 pm the Onondaga Historical Association will host a special fall ghostwalk tour starting at Liverpool Public Library.  Come and here the stories of some of Onondaga Counties most notorious characters.  Tours begin promptly at 5:30 pm, leaving every 15 minutes.  Tours will last roughly 1 ½ hours.  Tickets are $12 for Onondaga Historical Association members and $15 for non-members.  Reservations should be made online at www.cnyhistory.org.  For more information please call 428-1864.

On Tuesday October 4th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host a basket workshop.  Linda Scherz Allen of Adirondack Basketry will lead the class.  Tickets are $62 and include preparation, all necessary materials and the class fee.  Registration is required.  For more information or to register please visit www.adirondackbasketry.com.

On Tuesday October 11th, from 10 am to 4 pm, the Madison County Historian will host Archives day in the atrium on the first floor of Building 4 (DMV building) at the county complex.  This year will celebrate the portraits of judges that once hung in Madison Hall and the Madison County Courthouse until the 1960’s.  Over a dozen paintings will be on display including recently refurbished paintings of William Jervis Hough of Cazenovia and Thomas Barlow of Canastota.  Biographies of the judges and artists will be on display as well as actual court cases that the judges oversaw.  There is no charge for this event.  For more information please contact Madison County Historian at 315-366-2453.

On Wednesday October 12th at 7:00 pm the Erieville/Nelson Heritage society welcomes Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz who will present “From Bingley to Busti; A Preservation Tale.”  Urtz will tell the story of Bingley Mill, a mill that once existed in Madison County and how it still exists in other places today.  The talk will be held at the Town of Nelson Office Building.  There is no charge for this event.  For more information please call 315-366-2453.

On Friday October 14th at 6:30 pm the Morrisville Public Library will host a special evening with WWII Veteran Stan Davis.  Davis was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps in the European Theatre during WWII. He served as a Crew Chief on P47 style planes as well serving as an engineer on C47 transport planes.  He also was an amateur photographer who took and collected over 700 photos of his time overseas.  Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz recently digitized these images and will feature a number of these images as part of the talk.  Davis will talk about his experiences and the photos.  There is no charge for this event.  For more information please contact 315-684-9130.

On Thursday October 27th at 7:00 pm the Canastota Library welcomes Norm Dann who will present on the early life of Elizabeth Smith-Miller in Peterboro.Dann, author of the books “Ballots, Bloomers and Marmalade: The Life of Elizabeth Smith Miller” “Practical Dreamer: Gerrit Smith and the Crusade for Social Reform,” will speak about Smith-Miller’s childhood, education, and suffrage activities. On Wednesday November 9th at 12:00 pm Dr. Pamela L. Poulin will portray Amelia Jenks Bloomer at the Cortland County Historical Society.  Bloomer was the first woman to own, publish, and edit her own newspaper, starting in Seneca Falls 5 months after the first Women’s Rights Convention there, as well as being a “dress reform” advocate.  There is no charge for this event.  Light refreshments will be served.  For more information please contact the Cortland County Historical Society at (607)756-6071.

On Wednesday November 16th at 7:00 pm the Town of Onondaga Historical Society welcomes Ed Riley, owner and renovator of the Hotel Syracuse to the Onondaga Town Hall, 5020 Ball Road.  Riley will discuss the renovation process, history of the hotel and how a famous mural entitled “forefathers” was uncovered and restored.  There is no charge for this event.  Light refreshments will be served after the discussion.  For more information please email tohsociety@yahoo.com.

On Friday November 18th at 6:30 pm the Morrisville Public Library will host the presentation “From Bingley to Busti.”  Come and learn the story of a Madison County Mill which existed for close to 160 years before being torn down.  Here how remnants from the mill are now part of a thriving mill in western NY, and the miller’s home is a residence in another town.  There is no charge for this event.  For more information please call 315-684-9130.
