bloomers-nys-sign-300x225 elizabethsmithmillerThe first Canalside Talk of the 2016-2017 season will be held Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 pm.

Dr. Norman Dann, founder and member of the Cabinet of Freedom for the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, will speak about his new book, “Ballots, Bloomers & Marmalade: the life of Elizabeth Smith Miller.”

Miller was a modern woman in an era when being either modern or feminine was cause for criticism. She concerned herself with traditional elements of 19th-century life and also had a deep connection with the woman’s rights movement.

The library will also display Elizabeth Smith Miller’s personal copies of “The History of Woman Suffrage” produced by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Ida Husted Harper.

The Canalside Talks are a collaborative effort of the Canal Town Museum and the Canastota Public Library. Talks last about an hour and are free to the public.
