STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Programs are happening in schools, but the Canastota Public Library offers several programs that your children may be interested in attending.

Throughout the school year, students between ages 10 and 16 can attend drop-in sessions for Robotics and Arduinos at the library. Robotics drop-ins are held monthly on selected Mondays.

There is no need to pre-register. Students can feel free to attend if they are available. The Monday afternoon programs are scheduled from 4 – 5:30pm on the following dates: November 28, January 23, February 13 and March 27. Specific projects will be built and programmed using the Lego Mindstorm robotic kits.

Students who are interested in Saturday morning sessions can work on Lego Mindstorm robotic kits or on arduino kits. There is no need to pre-register for these drop-in classes either. The Saturday sessions will run from 10:30am until noon and will be held on the following days: December 2, January 7, February 4 and March 11.

Another STEM Program for Girls is called GEMS (Girls interested in Engineering, Math and Science) is held on the first Friday of every month from 3:30 until 4:45pm. Girls, between the ages of 10 and 16 may attend. The sessions include a speaker from related STEM careers as well as hands-on activities related to engineering, math and science.

We ask that girls contact us so that we have enough supplies for everyone who attends!

The GEMS sessions that are scheduled for the next few months are as follows:

  • Friday, December 2: Computer Science/2D and 3D Computer Programming
  • Friday, January 6: Engineering/Making Catapult
  • Friday, February 3: Gaming/Create a Computer Game

If you have any questions about these programs, please contact the library at 697-7030. The Canastota Public Library is located at 102 W. Center Street in Canastota,
