sealAs we are into this festive holiday time, the Madison County Office of Emergency Management wants to remind residents of some tips that will keep these wonderful times we spend together safe.

Christmas Trees: Artificial or Live Trees

-Make sure artificial trees are labeled as “Fire Resistant” and kept away from any open flames.

-Make sure if you select a live tree that it is fresh, has nice green needles, and the branches are flexible.

– Keep all live trees properly watered and avoid installation over registers, baseboard heaters, or other heat sources that will dry the tree out sooner. Make sure the tree is placed away from fireplaces, solid fuel stoves, electric or gas heaters, and all open flames.

– When the needles begin to brown and fall off remove the tree and dispose of properly.

Decorations

– Follow all manufacturer recommendations for proper use of lights and other electrical ornaments.

– Avoid the use or extension cords.

  • Unplug Christmas Lights and Decorations before going to bed.

– Never leave candles burning unattended.

– Make sure all holiday decorations are non-flammable or fire retardant.

– Never place wrapping paper or other gift packaging in a fireplace or woodstove.

Holiday Guests

– Make sure all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.

– Inform all overnight guests of your fire escape plan.

– Do not drink and drive.

– Provide plenty of food when serving adult beverages.

– Make sure everyone gets home safely.

Heating

– Be sure to have your heating unit properly serviced and keep your wood stove chimney clean.
