state-police-seal-150x150Oneida-based state police charged a North Syracuse man with aggravated DWI following a traffic stop in the town of Verona Saturday evening.

At approximately 9:10 p.m. Dec. 17, Trooper Steven Fountain observed a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling southwest on State Route 365 near Patrick Road weaving back and forth from the driving lane to the passing lane of the four-lane divided highway.

The operator was also observed to be using a cell phone while driving.

Fountain stopped the pickup truck and interviewed the operator Patrick V. Cafarchio, 24, of Reddick Drive, North Syracuse. While speaking with Cafarchio, Fountain observed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and also an odor of marijuana coming from inside the cab of the truck.

Sobriety tests indicated that Cafarchio was intoxicated and he was taken into custody for DWI. A smoking pipe and grinder containing marijuana were located in the center console of the truck. Cafarchio was transported to the state police barracks in Oneida for processing, where a breath test determined Cafarchio’s blood-alcohol content to be .20 percent.

A DMV check revealed the truck’s registration had been suspended due to no insurance in effect.

Cafarchio was issued traffic tickets for driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI (BAC of .18 percent or greater), failure to keep right, using a portable electronic device while driving, operating with a suspended registration, no insurance, uninspected motor vehicle and unlawful possession of marijuana.

He is scheduled to appear in Verona Town Court Jan. 3, 2017.
