Oneida-based state police charged a Rome man with DWI following a traffic stop in Verona Saturday night.

At approximately 11:20 p.m. on April 1, Trooper Christopher Budlong was patrolling on State Route 365 in the Town of Verona when he witnessed a maroon 2016 Ford F150 pickup truck drive from Willow Place and pass the red traffic light at the intersection with Route 365.

The pickup struck the guiderail in the center median of the roadway and then began driving northbound in the southbound lane of Route 365. Budlong was able to get the pickup truck stopped near the entrance to the Turning Stone Casino.

Budlong interviewed the operator of the pickup, Thomas F. Nitti, 56, of Seneca Street, Rome, and detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Sobriety tests indicated that Nitti was intoxicated and he was taken into custody for DWI.

Nitti was processed at the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined his blood-alcohol content to be .14 percent. Nitti was issued traffic tickets for DWI, Driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, passing a red light and other traffic charges and is scheduled to appear in Verona town court on April 11, 2017.
