Congressman Anthony Brindisi

“Build a Better World” is the theme of the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge sponsored this year by State Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi.

Brochures with information on the program, including a calendar to keep track of the days children read are being distributed now to schools throughout the Mohawk Valley. Participants are asked to read a book for a minimum of 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during July and August, either on their own, or with a parent or caregiver.

For Griffo’s program, children can register online with an adult’s help at www.griffo.nysenate.gov, or at their local library. Each child will then keep either a handwritten or online log of the books they read.

When the child has completed 40 days or more of reading, they can submit their journal on Griffo’s website or at Brindisi’s office, and they will receive an “Excellence in Reading” Certificate in the mail.

Griffo said: “The joy of reading that children experience at a young age is something that can inspire them throughout their lives as they develop an appreciation for all that can be found in a good book. But the habit of reading is something we should foster in children all year round, especially when school is out, and I encourage boys and girls to once again participate in my Summer Reading Program so they can remain engaged with books and make the most of their local libraries.”

Brindisi said, “When school ends and summer begins, it is important to encourage children to read books, and take advantage of their local library.  Studies consistently show that students who read over the summer are better prepared to resume school in the fall.  This year’s brochures have a helpful reading list organized by age group that provides some good suggestions following the theme of this year’s challenge.”
