Volunteers to install 2,000 alarms in Western & Central New York
The American Red Cross is seeking people to volunteer their time and help save lives at the Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event between September 23-October 15.
“Sound the Alarm in Western and Central New York and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires,” said Rosie Taravella, American Red Cross, Western and Central New York Regional Chief Executive Officer. “By volunteering with the Red Cross, someone can truly make a difference in someone’s life. Please join us and help Sound the Alarm by volunteering in your community.”
Volunteers will be installing smoke alarms at the following dates and areas:
- Central New York: Saturday, October 7 (850 alarms)
- Greater Rochester: Saturday, October 14 (700 alarms)
- Western New York: Saturday, September 23-Sunday, October 15 (250 alarms)
- Southern Tier: Saturday, September 23-Sunday, October 15 (100 alarms)
- Finger Lakes: Saturday, September 23-Sunday, October 15 (100 alarms)
If you are interested in joining with our Regional Sound the Alarm Cabinet members (listed below) in volunteering to educate people about home fire safety and install free smoke alarms, please visit http://www.redcross.org/local/new-york/western-central-new-york/home-fire-safety.
The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
Across the country, the Campaign is making a difference. As of May 31, 2017, the Red Cross and our partners across the country have saved at least 258 lives, including two in Buffalo and one in Rochester. Between June 1, 2016-May 31, 2017, volunteers have installed 4,358 smoke alarms in Western and Central New York.
