Oneida-based state police charged Toni J. Vernon, 22, of Croton on Hudson, for DWI following a one-car crash in Sullivan early Sunday morning.

At approximately 12:05 a.m. Sept. 17, Troopers Mackenzie Werenczak and Valerie Sgarlata were dispatched by Madison County 911 to a one-car personal injury automobile accident on Bridgeport-Kirkville Road in Sullivan.

Their investigation determined that a 2012 Dodge Avenger operated by Toni Vernon was northbound on Bridgeport-Kirkville Road when Vernon became distracted while talking on her cell phone. The vehicle traveled off the east shoulder of the roadway and struck an embankment.

Vernon and a passenger in the vehicle, Tatyana L. Atchley, 20, of Syracuse, were transported by ambulance to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse for treatment of head injuries. Further investigation revealed that Vernon was intoxicated, and she was placed under arrest for DWI.

A blood sample was drawn for submission to the State Police Forensics Lab to determine her blood alcohol content. A driver’s license check revealed that Vernon had been operating with a suspended license. Vernon was issued traffic tickets for DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle 3rd Degree, using a cell phone while driving and uninspected vehicle.

Vernon was arraigned in Sullivan Town Court and released to reappear Nov. 14, 2017.
