Oneida based state police charged Robert S. Matuszczak Jr., 53, of Canal Street, Port Leyden, with DWAI-drugs following a one-car rollover personal injury accident on State Route 31 in the town of Verona Tuesday morning.

At approximately 8:50 a.m. Oct. 17, Trooper Andrew Maurer was dispatched to a one-car rollover on Route 31 near Sterling Road in Durhamville. The accident investigation revealed that Matuszczak was operating a 2012 Ford Focus westbound on Route 31 when the vehicle crossed over the eastbound lane and drove off the roadway.

The Focus struck a culvert and became airborne before overturning into the ditch and coming to rest. Matuszczak was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Durhamville Fire Department and transported by ambulance to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse with back pain.

Further investigation revealed that Matuszczak was in possession of a quantity of heroin and Alprazolam and was impaired by the use of drugs. Matuszcak was charged with DWAI-drugs, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and other traffic charges; he is scheduled to appear in Verona Town Court Oct. 24, 2017.

Matuszczak is facing further charges, as the Ford Focus he was driving had been reported stolen from a construction site in Lewis County earlier that morning. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation into the stolen car.
