Great Swamp Conservancy celebrating 20th anniversary

The Great Swamp Conservancy of Canastota is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special event planned for Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. Harpist Patricia Beatty will start out the gala with soft melodic tones while hors d’oeuvres are being served in the museum.

Guest speaker is SUNY ESF Associate Professor Jacqueline Frair, who will discuss her research with coyotes. She teaches several popular courses including applied wildlife science, wildlife field techniques and landscape ecology.

She is also associate director of ESF’s Roosevelt Wild Life Station, whose mission is to deliver the science and trained professionals to preserve our wildlife heritage and save imperiled species worldwide.

Frair and her students have worked with a wide range of mammals in New York from bats to moose and otters to foxes, completing several studies on coyotes over the past 15 years. Her research also spans the globe, extending to peccaries, jaguar and other felids in South America and human-lion conflicts in Africa.
