Jan. 1 – New Year’s Day. Oneida Public Library will be closed Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, to celebrate the New Year. The library will be open as usual Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 9 a.m.

Jan. 2: Ready To Read: Music and Motion, Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Newborns to 4-year-olds and their parents or guardians will enjoy songs, rhymes, coordinated movements and just plain fun, all of which will help stimulate the children’s language skills.

Jan. 2: OPL Mascot Reception, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

OPL Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander hosts a reception for students artists who contributed their artworks for consideration in a library mascot contest. She will announce the winning design at the reception.

Jan. 3: Tech Help, Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Volunteer technical advisors will be on hand to help device and laptop users set up, adapt and get the most out of their devices. No appointment is needed.

Jan. 3: Family Game Night, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Game guru Breyt Coakley is back at the OPL Game Night to share his love of board games with all ages and to introduce some new favorite games of his own.

Jan. 4: Ready To Read, Thursday at 10 a.m.

OPL’s Megan Gillander offers children 2 to 5 years of age and their parents or guardians the pleasure of stories, songs and activities to help strengthen the children’s language skills.

Jan. 8 and 9: AARP’s Drivers Safety Class, Monday and Tuesday, 9:45 a.m.-1 p.m.

AARP-trained instructors offer a two-day classroom defensive driver course for potential discounts in car insurance. To register, call Bob Fish at 363-0455.

Can elementary-school students build a high tower or a bridge that can hold a great deal of weight? They can find out at this month’s After-school Science along with some vital information about weight and gravity.

Jan. 10: Book Talk with Tony Wonderley, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Former Oneida Community Mansion House curator, Dr. Anthony Wonderley, will offer in words and pictures a fresh and revealing look at John Humphrey Noyes’ Oneida Community and its evolution from Bible Communism to paternalistic capitalism. Copies of Wonderley’s new book, “Oneida Utopia,” will be available for purchase and signing by the author.

Jan. 13: Family Super Saturday: Face Painting, Saturday at 1 a.m.

Special guest Francesca Nishimoto will offer instruction on designing and executing face paintings and ask for volunteers to be her models.

Jan. 13: For Teens: Foundations in Personal Finance, Saturday at 12 p.m.

Designed for ninth through twelfth graders by finance expert Dave Ramsey, this six-session mini-course offers teens sound advice on budgeting, saving, careers and taxes through videos and free personal student workbooks. Following sessions will be held on the second Saturday of the month at 12 noon, Feb. through June. Students must register for the course at the library desk or by calling (315) 363-3050.

Jan. 15 – Martin L. King, Jr., Day (observed). Oneida Public Library will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in honor of Dr. King’s birthday. The library will be open as usual on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 a.m.

Jan. 18: Pushing the Limits Book Club, Thursday at 6 p.m.

Prof. Jen Herzog, a biology instructor at Herkimer County Community College, returns for a four-session book and science discussion program for adults. This month’s reading is the Anna Smaill dystopian novel “The Chimes,” which posits a world where human memory has been eliminated. Herzog will discuss both the genetic and environmental roots of memory. Participants should pre-register at the library desk and receive their copies of the “The Chimes.”

Jan. 31: Film Showing: “Farmers for America,” Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The documentary film “Farmers for America” focuses on a few farming families involved in the new movement to provide city dwellers with farm-fresh produce and healthier foods. On hand will be members of the local chapter of Future Farmers of America to discuss the state of the region’s agricultural industry.

Friends of the Oneida Public Library will have on sale the best of old and almost new jewelry and assorted accessories. All proceeds benefit the OPL.
