Utica Public Library to host classic fiction discussion group

The Utica Public Library will host its annual Classic 20th Century Fiction Discussion Group.

The selected novel for 2018 is Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis. This 1927 novel centers around a young, brash college male who is steered toward a career as an evangelical preacher. Lewis creates a thoroughly rich tale that offers a searing look at religious hypocrisy.

The novel caused a furor, was banned, and many denounced Lewis for his scathing examination. The discussion group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 7.

All registered participants will receive a free copy of the book and a discussion handout. Participants must register at the reference desk in the main lobby of the library and may pick up their free copy and handout at that time.

Registration begins at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 23. Refreshments are included. For more information, call the library at 315-735-2279.
