Syracuse International Airport wins international award for snow removal
Syracuse International Airport has been recognized with an international award for the excellent performance of airport snow and ice control for the 2017/18 winter season.
The Balchen/Post award was presented by the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives to the airport’s snow and ice control team for their dedicated efforts in maintaining the airport in safe and operational status.
The International Aviation Snow Symposium was first held in April 1967 in Allentown, Pa., under the General Chairmanship of Wilfred (Wiley) M. Post Jr., Manager of Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport, and founding Honorary Chairman Col. Bernt Balchen USAF Ret.
The purpose of the symposium, then and now, is to provide a forum for dialogue on the numerous
aspects of winter operations at airports.
“Congratulations to our fearless snow fighters who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the flying public in all weather conditions,” said Christina Callahan, Airport Executive Director. “The competition for this award is fierce, and to be acknowledged by the Airport industry as being the best in snow removal is an honor.”

The people at Hancock International Airport find a way, in almost any winter conditions, to keep our city open for travelers,” said Mayor Walsh. “It is no easy task, and we take it for granted too often. I salute the dedicated people at Hancock on this very well deserved honor.”
The award was presented on April 16, 2018, at the 52nd Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium held in Buffalo.
Syracuse International Airport was the winner in the Small Commercial (less than 100,000 operations per year) category.
