Tenney announces 2018 service academy appointments

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) announced that three local students have been selected to the United States Service Academies. Those Receiving Appointments to the U.S. Service Academies for 2018 are as follows:

 

United States Air Force Academy: John Gabor, Cazenovia High School, son of Robert and Mary Gabor. Accomplishments and Activities: Class Treasurer, Skiing, Cross Country, Track and Field, Triathlon, Tech Club, tutors, employed at a painting company and does extensive work as a volunteer.

United States Naval Academy: Keegan Steele, Whitesboro High School, son of Scott and Margaret Steele. Accomplishments and Activities: Boy’s State, National Honor Society, Class Vice President, AP Classes (World History, U.S. History), Model United Nations, Lacrosse, Madison County Children’s Camp.

United States Naval Academy: Emmalyn Smith, Brookfield High School, daughter of Todd and Krista Smith. Accomplishments and Activities: National Honor Society, Griffiss Institute/AFRL Challenge (second place), Class President, Soccer, Basketball, Softball, American Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator, various Club Sports.

“As the parent of a 2013 Naval Academy graduate, I know how challenging and exciting the service academy experience is for nominees and their families,” said Tenney. “Our region has a long tradition of military service to our great nation and the United States service academies provide a unique opportunity for those seeking to pursue the quality education provided by these venerable institutions. It is an incredible honor to help make this unique opportunity a reality for our next generation of leaders here in the 22nd District. The standards for admission to the service academies are rigorous and each of these nominees have demonstrated the dedication, tenacity and integrity necessary to serve our nation in this role. I would also like to thank the members of the Academy Selection Committee for their invaluable knowledge and work in selecting this outstanding group of students.”

Members of Tenney’s Academy Selection Committee interviewed the academy candidates and reviewed their backgrounds. Nominees were then selected by the board based on several factors including leadership skills, character, academic achievements, physical fitness and motivation. Upon recommendation by Rep. Tenney’s Academy Selection Committee, Tenney nominated each respective student to the service academy to which they applied.

Applications are now available for this year through Tenney’s New Hartford District Office. Those interested can call 315.732.0713. Applicants must be at least a junior in high school. Applications are due by Wednesday, Oct. 17, to the New Hartford District Office.
