Utica Zoo school break celebrates Earth Week April 21 through 28

Join us at the Utica Zoo and celebrate our Mother Earth. We will be celebrating Earth Day, Arbor Day and Environmental Education week with a variety of camps, classes and events. Visit org/school-break-programs for a full listing of programs.

April 22

1 to 3 p.m. Earth Day. Celebrate the Earth’s amazing diversity of animal species. Pick up a fun zoo scavenger hunt at the gate when entering the zoo. Turn in your completed sheet to docents in the discovery cottage, collect your prize, and meet some of our education animals face to face.

April 23

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bug Out. Invertebrates make up 97 percent of all the animal species on earth. Stop in the Zoo’s auditorium to meet a small selection of these amazing animals. Make a bug of your very own to take home.

April 24

1 to 3 p.m. Rainforests. Rainforests cover less than 2 percent of the Earth’s total surface area and are home to 50 percent of Earth’s plants and animals. Join us in the Zoo’s auditorium, meet some rainforests animals and learn what you can do to help these endangered habitats.

April 25

1 to 3 p.m. Endangered and Invasive Species. Join zoo educators in the discovery cottage to learn about invasive species and how they are changing the face of the northern forest. Meet a few of our invasive friends, try your hand at Invasive Species Jenga and make a “cootie” catcher.

April 26

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Trees are Terrific. Stop at the Discovery Cottage to learn all about trees and the animals that depend on them for survival. Make a tree identification guide to take home.

April 27

2 to 4 p.m. Oceans. Join Zoo educators in the Discovery Cottage and learn all about the amazing life in the Ocean. Make a sea creature of your own to take home.

April 28

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Utica Zoo’s Earth Day Event. Celebrate animals and how important they are to our world. Pine saplings will be given to the first 50 families in attendance and animal meet and greets will occur throughout the day.

  • Free Paper Shredding by Empire Recycling

  • Recycled Youth Art Contest
  • Bottle Drive sponsored by Utica Zoo Docents to benefit programs at Utica Zoo

Participate in our Recycled Art Contest at the Utica Zoo Earth Day Celebration. Make a project at home or stop by our craft station in the auditorium during the event to create a project. The contest will be divided into three age groups: Pre-kindergarten through first grade, second grade through fifth grade, and sixth grade through 12th grade. One winner will be chosen from each age group to win a family membership to the Utica Zoo.

Projects can be dropped off from April 21 through 28. All projects must be submitted by 2 p.m. April 28 to be entered into the contest. Only one project per person may be entered and all projects must be made of recycled materials.
