Cazenovia Public Library to host traveling Erie Canal exhibit

This month, the Cazenovia Public Library will host a travelling exhibit commemorating the bicentennial of the groundbreaking for the Erie Canal. “Two Hundred Years on the Erie Canal, 1817-2017,” includes an online exhibit, as well as a physical display that travels to different libraries throughout the region.

The exhibit, on display in the Library Gallery, includes four standing banners/posters that tell the story of the canal’s construction, historic significance, and impact. The display also features an Android tablet that allows visitors to browse the companion online exhibit. The archival images were selected from the Empire State Library Network’s New York Heritage digital collections and the Digital Public Library of America. The exhibition is sponsored by a Humanities New York Action Grant. The Central New York Library Resources Council organized the logistics. The traveling exhibit will be on display throughout the month of April. View the online content anywhere at https://dp.la/exhibitions/erie-canal.

The Library will also present two programs in celebration of the Erie Canal. Author Michael Keene will discuss his book, The Psychic Highway: How the Erie Canal Changed America, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 30. At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, the local Irish cultural group, Craobh Dugan will present “The Irish and the Erie”—a musical tribute to the Irish immigrants who helped build the canal. Additionally, the Library’s Lobby display case will feature Erie Canal-related information and images through the end of the month.
