Barres to be honored with Rotary Club Roses to the Living award

The Canastota Rotary Club is pleased to announce that Charlene Barres will be the 2018 recipient of the “Roses to the Living” Service Award. Barres is well-deserving of this honor for her years of volunteer service.

The lifelong resident of Canastota has been selected as the 2018 Rotary “Roses to the Living” recipient. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated “Service Above Self” through extensive volunteer work for the benefit of the community.

Barres began a Hope for Bereaved group in Canastota in the late 1980s and has done various benefits for ailing individuals within our community. She has been involved with Canastota’s’ Cans for Cancers, has volunteered at the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Foundation and started a sympathy card drive for the family of the Wisconsin kayaker that capsized in Oneida Lake in August of 2017.

Barres believes in pitching in wherever she can, and this is demonstrated by her involvement in a variety of organizations. She was a member of 2010 Bicentennial Committee, has served as a Canastota Kids Day volunteer, has been the Secretary for the Madison County & Town of Lenox Republican Committee, been a member of Stoneleigh Housing Board of Directors, is a part of the Canastota Alumni Association, served as Chamber of Commerce Treasurer, organizes the Annual Town of Lenox Easter Egg Hunt for community children, and has been the Boxing Hall Of Fame Parade Chairperson and year round volunteer. This year she added being the Holiday Parade of Lights Chairperson to her busy schedule.

Her good deeds include being the co-organizer of the St. Agatha garage sale as well as being a church usher. She has been a Secret Santa that coordinates and delivers many gifts to areas students, created an event in Canastota that raised closed to $20,000 for the American Red Cross 9/11 Boot Drive, and organized community donations of useful items to our neighboring Oneida Flood Victims. When John Douglas, the UPS delivery man retired, Barres thoughtfully posted a Facebook tribute to him.

Join us in celebrating her selfless achievements. The award dinner will be held Thursday, June 28, at Johnnie’s Pier 31 beginning with a social hour at 5 p.m.; dinner follows at 6 p.m.

Reservations are due by Monday, June 25, to Liz Metzger at 315.447.8912 or Lmetzger@midyork.org.

Dinner with dessert will be $20 per person, payable at the door that evening.
