June 4

Monday Movie Matinee: “The Post”

Monday at 1 p.m.

The Monday Movie Matinee for June 4 is Steven Spielberg’s latest film, “The Post,” a drama about The Washington Post owner, Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep), and its executive editor, Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), struggling to publish “The Pentagon Papers” in the face of fierce opposition from the Nixon Administration. Light refreshments will be served.

Ready To Read: Music and Motion

Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Newborns to 4 year-olds and their parents or guardians will enjoy songs, rhymes, coordinated movements and just plain fun, all of which will help stimulate the children’s language skills.

Yoga for Seniors

Tuesday, 2-3 p.m.

Back for a new season, Bill Skinner, a certified Hatha yoga instructor, will conduct a weekly class for seniors in safe and practical yoga postures and exercises for better all-round health. The class is free and open to all seniors. Sign up at the OPL desk.

Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Volunteer technical advisors will be on hand to help device and laptop users set up, adapt and get the most out of their devices. No appointment is needed.

Kids’ Book Club

Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Young readers in second– through fifth-grades in the Kids’ Club will celebrate the completion of “The BFG” by Roald Dahl by watching the Disney film version of the book and comparing and contrasting the book with the film.

For Teens: Foundations in Personal Finance, Session 6

Saturday at 12 p.m.

Registered ninth through twelfth graders complete the final session of finance expert Dave Ramsey’s mini-course on budgeting, savings, careers and taxes through videos and free personal student workbooks.

AARP’s Drivers Safety Class

Monday and Tuesday, 9:45 a.m.-1 p.m.

AARP-trained instructors offer a two-day classroom defensive driver course for potential discounts in car insurance. To register, call Bob Fish at (315) 363-0455.

Opioids in Oneida: A Public Forum

Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Whether it’s meth, cocaine, heroin, oxycodone or other prescription pain killers, the people of Madison County are being swept up in the national opioid epidemic. Leading area experts converge on Oneida Public Library to form a learned panel that will help define the problems of opioid addiction in the area, symptoms of addiction, rehabilitation and recovery. The panel includes Eric Faisst (County Health Department director), Susan Jenkins (BRiDGES executive director), Dennis McDermott (County/Family Court judge), Ofrona Reid (Oneida Health Care chief medical officer), James Strail (Maxwell House program supervisor) and Paul Thompson (Oneida City Police Department chief). G. Richard Kinsella will moderate. The public is invited to join the discussion and ask questions.

The Great War Book Discussion

Thursday at 7 p.m.

In this Centennial Year of America’s engagement in World War I, the OPL hosts the second of five monthly book discussions led by Prof. Roxanna Pisiak and Tom Murray, focusing in June on Willa Cather’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel “One of Ours,” which follows the hardships, loves and yearnings of young Claude Wheeler from the farm lands of Nebraska to the trenches of wartime France. Children’s book author/illustrator Eric Carle, most famous for “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” will be celebrated at a birthday party for young children and their parents or guardians, hosted by OPL Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander.

OPL Board Meeting

Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

The Oneida Public Library Board of Trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at 7:15 p.m. in the library’s History Room, 220 Broad St. The public is invited to attend. The History Room permits barrier-free access to the physically handicapped.

Red Cross Blood Drive

Wednesday, 12-6 p.m.

American Red Cross workers will be on hand at Oneida Public Library to take blood donations to help relieve the shortages in blood supply in the Northeast. Donors should schedule a time to donate by calling the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.
