July 3

Yoga for Seniors

Tuesday, 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Going strong throughout the summer, Bill Skinner, a certified Hatha yoga instructor, conducts a weekly class for seniors in safe and practical yoga postures and exercises for better all-round health. The class is free and open to all seniors. New students are welcome.

 

July 4

Independence Day

Wednesday

Oneida Public Library will be closed July 4 to celebrate Independence Day. The library will be open as usual on Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

 

July 9

Monday Movie Matinee: “Crooked House”

Monday at 1:00 p.m.

The OPL’s first summertime movie matinee is the 2017 film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s who-done-it “Crooked House,” which serves up a rich murder victim, a host of suspects in a country mansion, a charming sleuth unlike any other in Christie’s novels and an astonishing solution. The film features Max Irons, Glenn Close, Terence Stamp and Gillian Anderson. The film is free. Coffee, ice tea and popcorn will be served.

 

July 10

Rock the Library Camp

Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

In the OPL’s main summer reading program, Rock the Library Camp, kindergarteners up to fifth graders will expand their talents into music and dance that “rocks” along with learning the science and mathematics that underpins our sense of music. The program continues on Tuesdays at the same time until August 7. Registration is required.

Throwback Summer Movie Night: “The Princess Bride”

Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Children, along with their parents, will enjoy the comic 1987 hit film “The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner and based on the book by William Goldman. The show and the popcorn are free.

 

July 13

Merry-Go-Round Theatre’s “The Bremen Town Musicians”

Friday at 3:00 p.m.

The opening highlight of the OPL’s Summer Reading Program is the Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre’s performance of a new play with music, “The Bremen Town Musicians,” based on the Grimm Brothers’ folktale of the same name about four old farm animals that take to road to become musicians, only to fall into comic misadventures. The show is free and open to all ages.

 

July 16-20

The OPL Children Players Theater Camp

Monday-Friday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Tom Lemery returns to the OPL to direct children in grades three through eight in theater skills. This summer’s week-long camp focuses on performance art, specifically a “poetry slam,” in which children will select poems to recite with the vim and vigor of a theatrical performance. The players will perform their work in a performance on Friday, July 20, at 5:00 p.m. at the library. Registration is required.

Doug Salati Introduces “In a Small Kingdom”

Thursday at 2:00 p.m.

Illustrator and Oneida High School graduate, Doug Salati returns to his hometown to introduce to young children and their parents the recently published picture book “In a Small Kingdom,” which he illustrated based on the story written by Tomie dePaolo. Salati will read the book and talk about the illustrations, following with a simple art lesson on drawing.

 

July 19

Doug Salati on the Art of Illustrating Books

Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Doug Salati, a native of Oneida now living in Brooklyn, will offer adults, old and young, insight into the art of illustrating books, using his own work as examples. Salati, an Oneida High School graduate, received his M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York and was a 2015 Sendak Fellow. “In a Small Kingdom, written by Tomie dePaolo, is his debut picture book, which was published last April by Simon and Schuster.

 

July 19

The Great War Book Discussion

Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

In the third of five book discussions on great literary works that rose from World War I, Prof. Roxanna Pisiak and Tom Murray this month focus on the undervalued masterpiece by William March, “Company K,” which follows an American infantry company from training camp to the trenches of France. Copies of the book are available to registrants. Sign up at the OPL Circulation Desk.

 

July 23

Monday Movie Matinee: “Red Sparrow”

Monday at 1:00 p.m.

The 2018 spy thriller, “Red Sparrow,” based on Jason Matthews bestselling novel, stars Jennifer Lawrence as the Russian ballerina turned double agent and Joel Edgerton as her CIA love interest. The film is free. Coffee, ice tea and popcorn will be served.

OPL Board Meeting

Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

The Oneida Public Library Board of Trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at 7:15 p.m. in the library’s History Room, 220 Broad St. The public is invited to attend. The History Room permits barrier-free access to the physically handicapped.

 

July 25

Kids’ Summer Book Club

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Young readers will share their reading of the chapter book “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown and games and activities based on the book’s themes. Parents who sign up their children can also request copies of the book.

Geology Rocks

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

OPL’s Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander, herself a part-time geology instructor at Utica College, will teach young people in grades three through twelve how various types of rocks are created and how to identify them.
