OPL offers free summer movie fare

For the first summer Monday Movie Matinee, July 9, at 1:00 p.m., Oneida Public Library offers movie lovers the 2017 British film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel “Crooked House,” while the July 23 show at 1 p.m. will be the 2018 spy thriller “Red Sparrow,” based on the novel by Jason Matthews.

“Crooked House” is a classic British country estate who-done-it that serves up a rich and unpleasant murder victim, a charming sleuth, a suitable number of suspects and an astonishing solution to the crime. The film features Max Irons, Glenn Close, Terence Stamp and Gillian Anderson.

“Red Sparrow” stars Jennifer Lawrence as a ballerina in Vladimir Putin’s Russia who is recruited by the Russian spy agency to infiltrate CIA operations in Europe. Joel Edgerton plays the CIA bureau chief who becomes the object of her desire. Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling are also featured.

For the family, the OPL offers an evening showing of that old favorite “The Princess Bride” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 11. “The Princess Bride,” a 1987 comedy directed by Rob Reiner, is an absurd mish-mash of favorite fairy tales based on William Goldman’s novel. In his quest to rescue his true love, Princess Buttercup, from the nefarious Prince Humperdinck, the handsome but gullible hero comes across a comic series of characters who join him in the rescue.

All movie showings at the OPL, along with light refreshments, are free and open to the public. For more information, stop by the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., or call (315) 363-3050.
