Concerned Citizens in the Utica-Rome Area Join Nationwide Vigils to Confront Public Corruption and Demand Democracy

More Than 32 Advocacy Groups in 70 Locations Nationwide Will Hold Vigils to Confront Public Corruption and Demand Democracy on Wednesday, July 18 at sundown.

From attacks on the institutions that exist to hold our leaders to account–the press and law enforcement–to rampant conflicts of interest, ethics violations and the flagrant abuse of government offices for personal gain, the degradation and corruption of the American government by this President, his associates and many in his party has reached a profound new low. We must urgently rise up to defend our democratic system. That’s why members of Indivisible Mohawk Valley and Central New York Citizen Action will come together on Wednesday, July 18th to participate in a national vigil to Confront Corruption: Demand Democracy.

Democracy is how we hold wrongdoers accountable and create a government that reflects our values of participation, justice and decency. But we are on a dangerous trajectory. Our leaders actively conspire to avoid accountability for injustices such as separating families, detaining children, attacking the rule of law, putting donors ahead of voters and shaping voting districts to manipulate outcomes.

The vigil is designed to elevate the importance of protecting the Mueller Investigation, confront the corruption of the current administration, and demand a democracy that works for everyone. Additionally, it is part of a broader fight against a compromised Supreme Court, and threats to Roe v. Wade and the Affordable Care Act, both of which are supported by a majority of Americans.

The current administration is increasingly hostile to democratic norms. Just today the world learned that the President blames poor relations with Russia not on Russia’s jailing and killing of political opponents and journalists, their invasion of Crimea and threats against the sovereignty of other neighboring countries, or their interference with American elections, but on “U.S. foolishness and stupidity.” What corruption lies at the root of the President’s possibly treasonous attack on the United States and his alliance with Putin against Robert Mueller and the FBI?

As citizens we demand an answer to this question from Congress and other bodies with the power to investigate. We seek to confront corruption at the highest levels and call upon our elected officials to defend our democracy.

WHAT: Joining fellow Americans in 60+ cities across the country, concerned citizens will gather in New Hartford, NY to demand accountability from elected officials and confront corruption while bolstering our democracy nationwide. More on the national effort is at confrontcorruption.org.
