Oneida Public Library announces August calendar of events

August 1

The Memory Sketchbook

Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Over five workshop sessions meeting on Wednesday mornings in August at the same time, art teacher Carol Cotten will demonstrate how to “mind map” personal memories in words and images, using a range of art media. The art workshop for adults is limited to 22 students. Registration is required at the Oneida Library or by phone (315-363-3050).

August 1

Geology Rocks

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

OPL’s Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander, herself a part-time geology instructor at Utica College, will teach young people in grades three through twelve how various types of rocks are created and how to identify them.

August 7

Rock the Library Camp

Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

In the OPL’s main summer reading program, Rock the Library Camp, concludes with preparations for the Community Drum Circle on August 9.

Yoga for Seniors

Tuesday2:00-3:00 p.m.

Going strong throughout the summer, Bill Skinner, a certified Hatha yoga instructor, conducts a weekly class for seniors in safe and practical yoga postures and exercises for better all-round health. The class is free and open to all seniors. New students are welcome.

August 9

OPL’s Community Drum Circle and Picnic

Thursday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Oneida Public Library invites all ages to a blast at Allen Park on Broad St. Thursday evening, August 9, complete with a drum circle led by Ibrahim Samura, Breyt Coakley and Marco Rodegher in different styles from around the world. Guests are encouraged to bring picnic dinners, lawn chairs and drums, whether bought or of their own devising. Delivery Dad’s ice-cream truck will be on hand to offer free treats to the children.

Monday Movie Matinee: “The Leisure Seeker”

Monday at 1:00 p.m.

The OPL’s first August showing is the 2017 film “The Leisure Seeker,” starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland as an elderly couple fleeing Boston and their family in an old RV and taking to the road to Key West.

August 14

Throwback Summer Movie: “The Neverending Story”

Tuesday at 12:00 p.m.

Children, along with their parents, will enjoy the cult classic from 1984, “The Neverending Story,” one of the first epic fantasies from Hollywood. It concerns a book, a boy (Barret Oliver), a princess, a boy warrior (Noah Hatheway), a dragon and a dark force.

Lip Sync Battle!

Wednesday6:00-7:30 p.m.

A spin-off of the TV show, the OPL’s Lip Sync Battle will test the show-biz bravura of local tweens in performing pop favorite songs. Registration is required.

August 16

The Great War Book Discussion

Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

In the fourth of five book discussions on great literary works that rose from World War I, Prof. Roxanna Pisiak and Tom Murray this month focus on the remarkable stories, poems and sketches in “The Forbidden Zone” by Mary Borden, an American nurse who witnessed first-hand the war’s desolation at the Front from 1914 to 1918. August 20-24

First Lego League Robotics Workshop

Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Back for its sixth year, the robotics workshop led by Ralph Kohler and Tandi Paugh from the U.S. Air Force Lab at Rome will have students who have at least completed fifth grade building robots from Legos and power packs and programming them to do positive physical tasks. Class size is limited. Registration at the library is required.

Monday Movie Matinee: “Isle of Dogs”

Monday at 1:00 p.m.

The 2018 stop-motion animation film directed by Wes Anderson, “Isle of Dogs,” is a rollicking and winsome tale with sophisticated humor about a boy’s search for his dog Spots, which like all the dogs in a fictional Japanese city have been exiled to Trash Island because of a canine flu epidemic. Voices are provided by a stellar ensemble cast. The film is free. Coffee, ice tea and popcorn will be served.

OPL Board Meeting

Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

The Oneida Public Library Board of Trustees will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at 7:15 p.m. in the library’s History Room, 220 Broad St. The public is invited to attend. The History Room permits barrier-free access to the physically handicapped.

August 29

Kids’ Summer Book Club

Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Young readers will share their reading of the chapter book “The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1” by Rick Riordan as well as games and activities based on the book’s themes. Parents who sign up their children can also request copies of the book.

August 31

End of Summer Carnival

Friday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Children and parents can bid summer farewell with games, treats and the Utica Zoomobile at the OPL.

September 3

Labor Day

Monday

Oneida Public Library will be closed September 3 to celebrate Labor Day. The library will be open as usual on Tuesday, September 4, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
