New York state’s teachers endorse Stirpe for state Assembly

Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-Cicero) announced that the New York State United Teachers endorsed his re-election bid for the 127th Assembly District.

“Our kids’ futures start in the classroom,” said Stirpe. “Central New York teachers go to work each day to not only help their students learn a curriculum, but also give them the skills they’ll need to get good jobs and succeed. I’ll always stand with teachers and make sure they have a strong voice in Albany.”

Stirpe has consistently fought to strengthen Central New York schools and ensure they receive their fair share. He secured increased education aid in this year’s budget and successfully fought to eliminate a penalty the North Syracuse Central School District was facing due to past filing errors for school capital improvement projects. Stirpe noted that the penalty threatened vital programs and extracurricular activities for our students.

In his continued efforts to help our students get good-paying jobs after college, Assemblyman Stirpe secured funds to help connect local colleges with businesses that can provide them with the skills they need to succeed. Additionally, Stirpe has helped pass legislation to delink student test scores from teacher evaluations, recognizing that every student learns differently and that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work in the classroom.

NYSUT is an organization of more than 600,000 professionals and retirees from New York’s schools, colleges and health care facilities committed to strengthening the teaching profession and providing all kids with a high-quality education.
