As the newly Democratic House of Representatives gaveled into session in Washington, Indivisible Mohawk Valley held its first demonstration of the new year at the Oneida Square Roundabout on Genesee Street in Utica, urging Congressman Anthony Brindisi to support the democracy reform bill H.R.1.
H.R.1, if enacted, will be a bold, progressive, comprehensive democracy package that includes reforms on voter empowerment and access and curbs on corruption and money in politics. The demonstration was also in support of a clean funding bill, one which ends the shutdown without giving in to [President] Donald Trump’s demand for an unnecessary and expensive border wall.
“We want a genuine and robust democracy, where everyone who has a right to vote gets to vote, and gets to vote hassle and worry free,” said Indivisible member Celeste Friend, one of about 40 people who attended the peaceful, joyous demonstration. “We need to make sure that every citizen gets to vote, whether they have been to prison or not, whether they are disabled or not, whether their employers give them time off or not.”
Indivisible Mohawk Valley is part of the nationwide Indivisible movement, a progressive grassroots advocacy group that made a vibrant contribution to the Democratic “blue wave” victories across the country in this fall’s mid-term elections.
The demonstration was part of the Indivisible movement’s “Whose House? Our House!” national day of action. During the 2018 election, Indivisible Mohawk Valley was instrumental in getting out the vote, registering voters and campaigning for Anthony Brindisi in the 22nd Congressional District.
