On Jan. 19, 2019, state police observed an illegally parked vehicle in front of the pedestrian entrance of the Port Byron Service area of I-90 in the town of Montezuma. During the interview of the driver, Leonard R. Kenyon, 54, of Barre, Vt., probable cause to search the vehicle was established.
Kenyon was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana and a savage model 64 .22LR rifle with a fully loaded magazine and a round in the chamber.
Further investigation revealed Kenyon had an active arrest warrant from the Vermont State Parole. He was taken into custody and transported to SP Junius Ponds, where he was charged with the following:
- Third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony
- Possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle, an unclassified misdemeanor
- Unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation
- Fugitive from justice (out-of-state crime)
- Vehicle and traffic violations
Kenyon was arraigned in Montezuma Town Court and remanded to the Cayuga County Jail. No bail or return court date information is available at this time.
