Support your local veterans’ organizations

There are a number of veterans’ organizations that, among other endeavors, provide services to local communities, as well as national matters. One is the Marine Corps League. In Chittenango, it’s the Emerald City Detachment. This unit is small in numbers, but remarkably active, including in the enterprise called “Toys for Tots.”

The detachment also supports youth activities, including scouts. On Memorial Day, the Detachment can be counted upon to participate in public observances.

There are plenty of opportunities for additional public services, and the Detachment needs Marines who’re part of the Emerald City Detachment. Some haven’t actively participated lately, and that’s a bit of an embarrassment. The oft-stated purpose of the Corps is service, and the Commandant reminds us that once a Marine, always a Marine.

I urge you to commit to bringing your tough ol’ selves to meetings to help out. Keep the record of the Corps before the public. And encourage young folks to seriously consider enlisting – its’ important. It’s life-changing. And it’s one of the most honorable things they can do.
