(Canastota, NY – Sept. 2013) Farmers have always been innovators in discovering ways to add value to the products they produce and sell. But it can be a long process – challenging and time-consuming.

The public is invited to see an example of a local “work-in-progress” at 7 Trees Dairy Goat Farm on Saturday, Sept. 28 beginning at 1 p.m. The farm is located at 3123 Perryville Road in Canastota.

Marva Hogan, who has been operating 7 Trees Dairy Goat Farm for many years, recently received approval to operate her on-farm milk processing plant. This step has been perplexing at times, but has proved that patience and perseverance do pay off in the end. For Marva, this is an important step in growing her business, preserving its future, and being able to market the product – goat milk – at a premium.

The public is invited to tour the facilities as we learn about the steps Marva took to build the business. We will also examine and discuss some of the basics in dairy goat nutrition – forage sampling, interpreting forage test results, and putting the information to use on a farm like 7 Trees.
