A car show, some science and scavenger hunt top mentoring activities

(Madison County, NY – Oct. 2014) Twelve boys in (Community Action Partnership) CAP’s mentoring program where able to come together at 6th annual Guy’s Retreat. The activities had to do with confidence building and self-esteem boosting, meant to help them this school year. The event kicked off with a car show, science experiments, a scavenger hunt, and relay race. Following the activities were a special guest speaker, dinner, and the closing giveaway.

The car show included classics, sport cars, modern rides and a big-rig tow truck, helped put together by George Rink and Robbie C’s.

The fall-themed scavenger hunt followed as well as the relay race. Buzzy Dale presented why “Science is Awesome,” which included experiments, such as: “Glowing pickles, “The Death of a gummy bear,” “Electrocuting hotdog,” “Make your own slime,” and “Submarine water bottles.” Next, the special guest presenter, Sam Reeder, Regional Services Coordinator of The Salvation Army, spoke of Guys’ roles in the Community for his platform. The boys were guided to the definition of a community, recall times the where they have been and have helped their community as well as identifying those that provide for their local areas.

The evening wrapped up with campfire cooked dinner and the giveaways. The mentees were given the chance to “shop” for clothing, gather books and toys, also take home a goody bag, put together by Melissa King.

The evening could not have been a possibility without the helpers that included CAP staff, volunteers, mentors, and the donations of goods and services for this event.

The following funders make this program and activities possible: Department of Social Services, Madison County Youth Bureau, OPWDD, United Way of Greater Oneida, and many other contributions of Madison County.
