(Wampsville, NY – Feb. 201, 2015) The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has a new member in their ranks – Safetypup!

Safetypup is the new child safety mascot who will be taking over from the Sheriff’s retiring McGruff.

Sheriff Allen Riley said that in the continuing efforts to keep our children safe, this puppy will be helping Sheriff’s Deputies and Community Services staff to educate children about the importance of safety in their day to day activities.

Throughout the year, the Sheriff will be promoting prevention talks and presentations at events all around Madison County. Whether it’s wearing a helmet when riding a bike, being properly secured in a child safety seat, saying no to drugs, dealing with bullying, and being aware of strangers are just a few of the topics the Sheriff’s Office wants children and their parents to know more about. Safetypup will help get the kids involved so they can learn more about these valuable lessons.

Safetypup is the public face of the National Child Safety Council, whom the Madison County

Sheriff’s Office partners with. Through donations from community businesses, the Sheriff is able to provide a number of child safety-related items to children and their parents.

“Our children always have and will continue to be our greatest gift, and anything we can do to help them have a safe environment is a top priority,” Riley said. “Our community is generous in their donations, which allow us to get safety messages and information to our kids, and the support of local businesses shows that this truly is a community effort.”

Safetypup will join the Sheriff’s Office in existing child safety programs such as Operation Safechild ID cards, community events, child safety seat checks, and school visits.

Any organization needing more information on these programs, or to request a visit from Safetypup, is asked to contact Jackie Anderson, Community Services Aid for the Sheriff’s Office at (315) 366-2482, or email at Jacqueline.Anderson@madisoncounty.ny.gov.
