Upon his retirement in 1987, Larmann expanded his commitment to volunteerism and only a sampling is listed below.

Larmann served for 47 years in the Civil Air Patrol as a Mission Pilot, Squadron and Group Commander and New York Wing Operations Officer and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In 1997, he became a founding member of the CNY Chapter of the North Country Trail Association (NCTA). Over the years, he has served numerous roles for the organization and continues to serve as the Newsletter Editor.

For six years Larmann served on the NCTA National Board of Directors and received their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. The National Park Service named him as an Outstanding Volunteer with more than 10,000 hours in 2007.
