relay for life logo(Oneida, NY- April 2015) Dogs and their owners are invited to join the American Cancer Society for its first Bark For Life of Madison County, an event that celebrates cancer survivors, honors those lost to cancer, and provides an opportunity for dog lovers and their canine friends to support the Society’s efforts to save lives and create more birthdays.

The Bark For Life of Madison County will be held May 9 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Allen Park in Oneida. Because dogs many times serve an important caregiving role for survivors, the event organizers decided it was time they are recognized for their efforts. The Bark for Life shares the theme of the Relay for Life: “Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.”

The event is a fundraiser for the Researching for Survivors and Grandpa’s Girls teams and all proceeds will benefit the Relay For Life of Madison County. The registration fee is $10 per dog prior to the event and $15 at the event.

“It’s a great opportunity to have fun, meet new friends, and join with your four-legged family members in supporting Relay For Life,” said Kristen Stewart, one of the event planners. “When you participate in Bark For Life and the Relay, you’re also helping to fund cancer research, education, advocacy, and community programs for cancer patients and their families.”

The event will include activities for the entire family, including the family dog, with vendors, games, raffles and entertainment.

At 10 a.m. there will be a short opening ceremony followed by a group dog walk. There will be snacks, beverages and throughout the event there are canine demonstrations as well as contests, like a pet/owner look-a-like, musical doggie sit, and a best licker contest.

Sponsors of Bark For Life can set up a booth on site the day of the event and may distribute information, flyers, and products to the crowd.

The noncompetitive dog walk event gives dogs and their owners a chance to become involved in raising funds and awareness for the annual Relay for Life of Madison County returning to the Oneida High School track on May 30.
