Damages to underground utility lines can create safety concerns for the community and utility workers that can sometimes result in injury and event death, like the recent incident in Murrieta, California. That’s why Dig Safely New York strives to raise even more awareness to 811 before you dig through its 811 Day (Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019). Even though notifying us before you dig is a serious matter, we try to make the day fun and educational for families and communities statewide.
This year, we have an array of events to educate the 8.4 billion people who make up Upstate New York. In addition to the events, we have giveaways representing the 811 logo to serve as a reminder to always 811 before you dig.
What is 811?
811 is the national number designated by the Federal Communications Commission that connects professionals and homeowners to their local one-call center, free underground safety resources, and educational opportunities provided by Dig Safely New York, Inc. Whether you are landscaping, building a fence or a deck, or installing a pool, no project that involves digging is too small or insignificant. If you are planning to dig on your property for any reason, state law requires you to place a location request with Dig Safely New York, Inc. at least two (2) full working days, but no more than ten (10) working days, before beginning your project, to ensure all underground utility lines are properly marked by their owners.
Why Celebrate 811 Day?
811 Day represents the individuals who call New York State home and the families that build our communities. It represents the pursuit of continuing safe digging best practice education and the tireless effort to protect what matters most — you. Whether you are landscaping, building a fence or a deck, or installing a pool, no project that involves digging is too small or insignificant. We invite you to join us in celebrating 811 Day, as we share on Facebook, Twitter, and www.DigSafelyNewYork.com.
A Message from Dig Safely New York’s Kevin Hopper, Executive Director
“Dig Safely New York, Inc. continuously works to achieve many goals surrounding underground utility safety and education. For example, last year, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that provides any excavator who works for a local government or operator, as well as their hired contractors, must complete an approved training and education program. As for the homeowners, events like 811 Day helps us reach and educate the community through ball games, festivals and runs. Both efforts are to ensure that utilities, families, and businesses are safe and protected.”
