The Utica Municipal Housing Authority today announced it will hold AmeriCorps member recruitment fairs on Wednesday, December 4 and Wednesday, December 11. Sessions will be held at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on each day at the Chancellor Apartments Community Room, 417 Bleecker Street, Utica. Attendees are encouraged to bring their resumes. Members will start their 12-month term of service starting in January 2019. AmeriCorps members commit to serve our community for at least a year and receive a modest living stipend, an educational award, child care, student loan deferment, and career pathway training in human services.
Applications are due December 20. Applicants must be at
least 18 years of age. Members may apply now through https://my.americorps.gov.

In its 8th year of implementation, the UMHA AmeriCorps Program serves residents in the three county area of Oneida, Herkimer, and Madsion Counties. AmeriCorps is a program that engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance, fringe benefits, an education award, health insurance, childcare, and professional development opportunities. AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to gain personal and professional development skills, take on leadership roles, receive training and mentoring in paraprofessional case management and service coordination, work with community partners, and build professional networks. The program is recruiting a wide range of members including seniors, young people, people changing careers, and others who want to make a difference in their communities. The program has both full and part-time slots available. Six of the AmeriCorps members work at Upstate Cerebral Palsy helping disabled youth and adults and the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees (The Center) assisting newcomers to obtain jobs and housing.
In the Utica MHA program, AmeriCorps members help people move out of poverty by focusing on community needs such as economic opportunity, poverty reduction, human services, housing, financial literacy, job development, service coordination, youth, elderly and disabled, and veteran services. Members will also be assigned to work at local agencies serving the disabled, refugees, and immigrants as well as the Utica Public Library Outreach Center, Cornerstone Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church, public housing developments, and other locations through the UMHA Homeless Street Outreach Program.
The program receives funding from the U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service, which is administered in New York State by the NYS Commission on National and Community Service as well as the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
The AmeriCorps Program is also seeking nonprofit organizations, colleges, schools, health care providers, Native American tribes, and government agencies in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison Counties to serve as host sites for AmeriCorps members.
