Off-duty police officer rescues dogs trapped in house fire

On July 16, 2020, at 2:12 p.m., state police responded to a reported structure fire at 5384 Guy Young Road in Cicero.

Investigation revealed off-duty Syracuse Police Officer James Nowodworski, on his way into work, observed heavy smoke from the residence. Nowodworski approached the home and heard dogs barking inside. After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with anyone inside, he made entry into the home. He searched the home for residents and finding none, rescued two dogs from the home.

Members of the Brewerton Fire Department arrived on the scene and were able to quickly contain the fire to the garage area. No injuries to the dogs or first-responders were reported. 

State police were assisted at the scene by members of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Cicero Police Department.

Troopers investigating fatal crash in Remsen

State police in Remsen are investigating a fatal one-vehicle crash that occurred July 18, 2020, on Joslyn Road in the town of Remsen, Oneida County.

Preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 2 p.m., a 1970 Pontiac GTO, operated by Richard L. Palazzoli, 74, of Weedsport, was traveling westbound on Joslyn Road when he lost control of the vehicle, drove off the south shoulder of the roadway and struck a tree.

Palazzoli was airlifted to SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation continues.
