Join on Zoom or in person for a lecture by landscape architect, Martha Lyon. Lyon recently completed an extensive Cultural Landscape Report for the Oneida Community Mansion House. A Cultural Landscape Report is a document that examines the complete history of a landscape for the way it developed in terms of plants, vegetation, architecture, and the ways in which it was used by humans throughout time. Lyon will share her richly illustrated findings about how the 13 acres surrounding the Mansion House have evolved from a farm to pleasure garden, private club to a museum campus and beyond. On Saturday, Oct. 11th, at 9 a.m. the Village of Canastota will host 4th annual Freedom Walk. Walk with us and trace a portion of the footsteps of 104 abolitionists who escaped an angry pro-slavery mob in Utica in Oct., 1835, embarked on an Erie Canal barge to Canastota, and climbed the hills to Peterboro where they formed the New York State Antislavery Society. Registration will open at 8 am at the Erie Canal Brewing Parking lot, followed by a brief program will take place at 9 a.m. and the walk will start at 9:30 a.m. The walk is from Canastota to Clockville and back. A bus ride is available to those who want to attend but cannot make the walk. Seating is limited. Ride reservations must be made by Sept. 15. To walk or drive is $40. On Wednesday, Oct. 22nd, at 6 p.m. the Morrisville Public Library will host a special screening of “Erie: The Canal That Made America.” This documentary, produced by, runs 55 minutes and explores the importance that the Erie Canal had on the development of the United States. On Friday, Oct. 24th, the Chenango County Historical Society will host Haunted History: An Exploration with Pride Paranoral NY. Led by seasoned paranormal investigator Kenny Harris, this evening features a night of fun, education, and exploration of the paranormal possibilities at the museum’s flagship facility, Ward School No. 2. On Sunday, Oct. 26th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host a basket weaving class. Come celebrate the 200th anniversary of the completion of the Erie Canal at this special event that will feature live music, food, family activities and more.
On Tuesday, Oct. 28th, at 7 p.m. Brookfield Historical Society will host a special presentation of “Madison County on Fire.” Come and hear Madison County Historian Matt Urtz talk about his new book Fires of Madison County. The book looks at damaging fires from throughout Madison County’s history and examines what happened and how it impacted the local community. On Wednesday, Oct. 29th, at 7 p.m. the Limestone Ridge Historical Society will host a special presentation on “Lost above New York.” Join Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz who will recount a story from January of 1945 about when a B-17 bomber on a routine training flight got lost between Syracuse and Vermont during a snowstorm. Not able to find anything that could give them a clue the crew of nine decided to abandon ship and crash the plane in a farmer’s field in Nelson, NY. One man died when his parachute did not open before he hit the ground. This presentation looks at the event and how it happened. There is no charge for this event.
