Women’s Swimming, Diving Opens 2013 with Win

(Lewisburg, Pa. – Jan. 11, 2013)  The Colgate women’s swimming and diving team won 11 individual events and opened 2013 with a 161-139 win over Bucknell on Friday afternoon.

Emma Santoro and Lindsey Sagasta led the way with three wins apiece, while Ryan Marynowski won two and Kim Pilka swept both diving events.

Santoro took home wins in both breaststroke events and a victory in the 200 individual medley. She got started with the 100 breaststroke, winning the event with a time of 1:05.83. Then Santoro swept the breaststroke events with a first-place finish in the 200 at 2:21. Santoro’s individual day ended with the third win of the meet as she won the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:07.95.

Sagasta started the second half of her first season with wins in all three freestyle sprints. The rookie won the 200 free by just under a second with a time of 1:51.65 and then followed that with a win in the 50 free at 23.98 seconds, which was career best. Sagasta rounded out her day with a win in the 200 free with a time of 52.46 seconds.

The wins kept coming and this time they came in the butterfly events with Marynowski earning victories in both the 100 and 200. She swam to a first-place finish easily in the 200, clocking in at 2:04.04, which was six seconds ahead of second place. Marynowski got back in the pool for the 100 fly and won again with a time of 57.57 seconds, narrowly beating out teammate Jenna Jacoby, who took second at 58.84 seconds.

Pilka continued to dive well after the break as she won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. She scored a 272.70 in the 1-meter to win by just under 19 points and then took home a victory in the 3-meter competition with a score of 296.40.

Lia Kunnapas was able to contribute to the team victory with a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.95 and also took home a second-place swim in the 100 back at 57.97 seconds. Morgan Cohara chipped in with a pair of second-place swims in the 1000 free and 500 free. She finished second with a time of 10:21.91 in the 1000 and swam a 5:04.62 in the 500.

In the relay events, Colgate started the day off with a win in the 200 yard medley relay. Kunnapas, Santoro, Jacoby and Sagasta teamed up to take the first event of the day with a time of 1:47.53.

Colgate will be back in action Jan. 12 at Cornell.

Men’s Swimming, Diving Starts Second Half at Bucknell

(Lewisburg, Pa. – Jan. 11, 2013) The Colgate men’s swimming and diving team got two individual wins from Dan Sweeney, but the Raiders dropped a 193-92 decision to Bucknell on Friday afternoon.

Sweeney took home wins in the 50 free and 100 butterfly. He earned his first win of the day in the 50 free with a time of 21.30 seconds and then followed that with a victory in the 100 fly later in the meet, clocking in at 57.27 seconds.

Des Cairns earned Colgate’s third individual victory, which came in the 100 back with the rookie clocking in at 52.70 seconds. Classmate Milos Gak had another high finish for the Raiders as he took second at 1:45. 86 in the 200 free.

The 200 yard medley team of Cairnes, Sweeney, Haakon Brekke and Carter Christensen took home third place with a time of 1:38.16  in the event that kicked off the meet.

Colgate will be back in action Jan. 12 at Cornell.
