Hamilton Public Library News

By Hilary Virgil

(Hamilton, NY – Feb. 2013Hilary Virgil for web) If you haven’t already heard, the 2013 Caldecott & Newbery Award winners were recently announced! Author-illustrator Jon Klassen was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his picture book This is Not My Hat; a quirky tale of an underwater theft and consequence.

Katherine Applegate received the Newbery Medal for her novel The One and Only Ivan. Although fictional, Applegate’s story is largely based on the real account of a silverback gorilla kept as an exhibit at a shopping mall. Both award-winners are available to borrow through the Mid York Library System.

We can’t wait for our own copies to arrive in Hamilton soon.

We have several recent additions to our library collections. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling has arrived in the adult fiction collection, along with The Prodigal Son by Coleen McCullough and the new Dick Francis’ book (authored by his son) titled Bloodline.

A new nonfiction book Understanding Alzheimer’s: an introduction for patients and caregivers has also recently been added to the collection.

A few of the new items to highlight from our young adult section include the graphic novel version of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic A Wrinkle in Time and the new novel Curse of the Thirteenth Fey: The True Tale of Sleeping Beauty by Jane Yolen.

We are also happy to announce that in honor of retired library director, Barbara Coger, we have begun to give our children’s collection a face-lift, purchasing newer editions of several classic children’s books, for young readers to continue to enjoy for years to come.

Please stop by the library or browse online to continue to see what is new at the Hamilton Public Library.
