(Hamilton, NY – March 6, 2013) Colgate freestyler Sami Wary is one of 10 student-athletes named to the 2013 Academic All-Patriot League Swimming and Diving Team, announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Wary is a sophomore psychology major with a 3.58 GPA. The Harrisburg, Pa., native was part of Colgate’s third-place finish at last month’s Patriot League Championships.
She helped the Raiders’ 400-yard freestyle relay team to a Patriot League championship with a time of 3:23.43. Wary also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, while boosting Colgate to a pair of third-place finishes in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.
Her point total earned Wary a position on the All-Patriot League second team.
Navy’s Laura Gorinski was named Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Gorinski becomes the second in the sport to claim the award three times, joining Navy’s Kelly Zahalka, who was honored from 2007-09.
This year’s scholar-athlete and the team were nominated and voted on by the League’s swimming and diving sports information directors, who cannot cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible.
