Lynch Makes Second Team; Stockill Named All-Rookie
(Hamilton, NY – March 2013) Two Colgate basketballers are among this year’s Patriot League award winners announced Tuesday March 5 in advance of the annual postseason tournament.
Jhazmine Lynch was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team, while freshman Josie Stockill earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
“Jhazmine is our leading scorer, but her defense has been very consistent in the last 8-9 games,” Colgate head coach Nicci Hays Fort said. “If she’s not hitting shots, she can still be a great defender for us. I know I’m going to miss her next season.”
“And Josie is a special kid. She’s wise beyond her years and we’re really lucky to have her. She’s had some bumps, and she definitely needed to get banged around a little bit to get adjusted to the American game. But she’s done a good job of being really stable for us.”
Lynch leads the Raiders with a 9.4 scoring average and ranks among the conference’s top 10 in three individual categories. The San Diego senior is second in steals at 1.9 per game, fourth in free throw percentage at 80.2 and ninth in 3-point field goal percentage at 30.9. She has climbed to ninth on Colgate’s all-time steals list with 210, and is 12th in career scoring at 1,182.
Stockill ranks sixth in the Patriot League in blocked shots with 36. The New Zealander is third on the team in both scoring (6.9) and rebounding (4.2), and shoots 43.6 percent from the field and 74.5 percent from the line.
Colgate plays Thursday at Army in the Patriot League Tournament’s quarterfinal round. Start time is 7 p.m.
The Raiders and Black Knights split their season series, with Army claiming a 51-48 win in West Point on Jan. 23, and Colgate rallying for a 60-56 triumph in Hamilton on Feb. 20.
“The two games against Army have been a lot of fun because they’ve just been great basketball games,” Hays Fort said. “We know it’s going to be a tough game. We just have to try to eliminate their ability to take open shots. It sounds simple, but they have such great shooters on their team.
“It’s going to be a great atmosphere for women’s college basketball. I like going to Army, and our student-athletes are starting to appreciate it as well. You can be fearful of it or fearless of it, and we’ll see which team of mine shows up Thursday night.”
