(Cazenovia, NY – March 17, 2013) Despite the frigid conditions outside, the competition was heated Sunday afternoon on Christakos Field as the Cazenovia College women’s lacrosse team took on SUNY Canton. In an evenly matched and fiercely competitive game, the Kangaroos edged out the Wildcats by the final score of 8-7. Both teams now stand at 1-2 on the season.

Cazenovia found themselves in a 1-0 hole just one minute into the contest, but the resilient Wildcats responded quickly when Abby Webster (Syracuse, N.Y.) ripped the back of the net at the 28 minute mark.

Both teams settled down and picked up on the defensive side of the field throughout the remainder of the first half. Taylor Haesaert (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the year and sharp shooter Alicia Priest (Camillus, N.Y.) notched another Cazenovia score, but Canton tallied four more goals to take a 5-3 lead into the half.

The Kangaroos established the momentum throughout most of what proved to be a physical second half (54 total fouls) after scoring at the 24 minute mark for a 6-3 lead. However, Priest brought the Wildcats, and the rowdy student section, back to life scoring consecutive goals, at the 16 and 10 minute mark.

Canton called a timeout to slow the Cazenovia charge and promptly responded with two goals for what appeared to be a commanding 8-5 lead with 2:25 left in the game. But, Cazenovia did not hesitate to show their true Wildcat spirit as Kim Vrigian (Clifton Park, N.Y.) ripped a score followed by another Priest goal off a deft pass from Webster.

Only down by the narrow margin of 8-7, Cazenovia got one more shot on goal, but unfortunately the ball ricocheted off the inside of the post, avoiding the possibility of overtime and giving Canton the 8-7 victory.

The Wildcats defense was stellar behind four caused turnovers by Anna Cariello (Middletown, N.Y.) and 14 saves by goal keeper Christina Marra (Ballston Spa, N.Y.).

Cazenovia continues their current home stand this upcoming Wednesday when they host Hartwick. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
