(Morrisville, NY – April 28, 2013) The Morrisville State College women’s 
lacrosse team saw an eight game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon, as visiting Keuka College collected the 18-11 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory, claiming the regular season conference title.
The Mustangs drop to 9-6 overall and 8-1 in conference action, and will await NEAC tournament seeding and additional information as it becomes announced at the beginning of the week.
Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) led the Morrisville State efforts with three goals, while teammate Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) found through double and triple teams to notch two tallies and assist another. Meghan Soto (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Rachel Perine (Cortland, N.Y.) each posted two scores, while Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Megan Carlin (Pawling, N.Y.) rounded out top scoring with a goal each. Young also posted an assist.
Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) recorded the loss in net, making five saves.
Taylor Smith led the Storm with six goals and an assist, while teammate Maggie Bonafede had a huge day on the field, scoring four and assisting another six.
Molly Hogan collected the win, posting four saves.
In the battle of conference undefeated, Keuka came out of the gates quickly, and posted the first three tallies of the day, all from Smith, before Wood responded for Morrisville State with two scores to make it a 3-2 game with 22:41 remaining in the opening half.
The Storm added two others to make it a three goal game, and Edmondson cut it to two, but that’s as close as Morrisville State would get as Keuka rattled off five additional scores for a 10-3 lead at the half.
The Mustangs struggled in the first half, only mustering nine shots, clearing 5-of-11 opportunities while recording 14 turnovers.
The second half saw another quick tally by Keuka, for an eight goal lead, that eventually extended to 10, but the Mustangs wouldn’t go away quietly, as they battled back to make it an eight goal game midway through the period.
With Morrisville State threatening and carrying the momentum, Smith notched another tally and Bonafede added one under the 10 minute mark to put the game out of reach as Keuka collected the win.
Both teams played pretty even, Keuka holding the 30-29 edge in ground balls and Morrisville the 16-15 edge in draw controls. The difference was in turnovers, as Keuka caused 12 of the Mustangs 29 miscues, some leading to fast break tallies.
Tournament seeding will be announced by the conference office later tomorrow afternoon.
Prior to the game seniors Young and Abby Muraco (Amherst, N.Y.) were honored for their dedication and service to Morrisville State and the women’s lacrosse program.
