(Morrisville, NY – Mayu 1, 2013) The Morrisville State College athletic department has named freshman Tiffany Burks (Macedon, N.Y.) and junior Brandon Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the Week ending April 29.
Burks, designated player and pitcher for the softball team, was key to the Mustangs play throughout the week, going 8-for-16 from the plate (.500), scoring six runs, four RBI’s, while throwing three complete games on the mound. Of her six hits, one was a double, two were triples and two were homeruns.
Against Cobleskill, Burks went 2-for-4 in game one, drove in two RBI’s on a triple and solo home run as the Mustangs were edged by the hosts 5-3. On the mound, she posted four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
She followed her performance with a dominating 4-for-5 batting performance against Keuka, hitting her best 2-for-2 in the second of the doubleheader action that included two runs scored and two RBI’s off another triple and solo homerun. Her homer came in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Morrisville State to a 3-2 conference victory over the North Division Champions.
The freshman is a graduate of Ganada High and is majoring in liberal arts and science: humanities and social science at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Michelle Burks of Macedon.
Shannon led the men’s lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory over rival Cazenovia, as they wrapped up their regular season and secured a play-off bid with the victory. In the contest he recorded a collegiate best all around performance, scoring three goals, picking up a team high 12 ground balls, caused a turnover and dominated the center line with 13-of-15 face-off wins.
Early in the second quarter, Shannon won the face-off and seconds later stunned the Wildcat defense with an unassisted tally up the center, the score that proved to be the eventual game winner.
The junior midfielder is a graduate of Lenape Valley Regional High and is majoring in journalism and communication for online media at Morrisville State. He is the son of Gigi and Kevin Shannon of Stanhope, New Jersey.
