Cazenovia Public Library news
(Cazenovia, NY – May 2013) All are invited to join author Monica Meira Vaughan on Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room. Her presentation “Being a Writer” will focus on the process of writing and how it led to her recent novel The Ability.
Appropriate for ages 8 to adult, The Ability delves into the extraordinary abilities of the twelve-year-old mind. One such twelve-year-old is Christopher Lane, who has been discounted by his teachers as a liar and thief, and whose mom doesn’t have the energy to deal with him.
But a mysterious visit from the Ministry of Education indicates that Chris might have some potential after all. When he is invited to attend the prestigious Myers Holt Academy, he is astounded at what he—and his peers—can do as they test the boundaries of the human mind. Their experimentation has consequences, though, and soon Chris is forced to face them.
After the age of fifteen, Vaughan spent every summer in Cazenovia with her father and stepmother Frederico and Kathy Meira. Here she spent time at the lake and bought books at the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Where she writes is part of Vaughan’s writing process, and her time in Cazenovia was one of those places.
A book that appeals to adults and children alike, The Ability has received rave reviews. “I can now see how adults could love a story told for children,” one reviewer writes, and Publishers Weekly adds, “Readers will enjoy the candy-shop wish fulfillment in this fast-paced, superhero-tinged spy novel. This could hit a middle-grade sweet spot.”
Copies of The Ability will be available for purchase and signing at the May 23rdpresentation where Vaughan will also do a short reading and give the audience a few little secrets about the book that they won’t find anywhere else.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information on Vaughan’s presentation or other events at the Cazenovia Public Library, call 655-9322 or visit cazenoviapubliclibrary.org.
