United States Colored Troops March to Peterboro

(Peterboro, Smithfield, NY – June 2013) With the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the recruiting of African American soldiers in the Union Army. The 21st annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend observed the Sesquicentennial of the United States Colored Troops with programs during the annual event .

The 12th Regiment U.S. Infantry, Co. A, the military host of the 21st annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend, is a living history unit from Syracuse. The two-day event featured a military and civilian encampment on the green in the hamlet of Peterboro and included period music, entertainment, shopping, demonstrations, hamlet walking tours, programs, exhibits, period fashions, chicken barbeque, pancake breakfast, drill exercises, a Sunday sermon, daily skirmishes and a children’s area with games and toys.
