(Madison County, NY) There have been many flood watches and warnings lately as a result of a pattern of intense pop-up thunderstorms that have been moving through the region. Some of these storms have arisen with little or no advance warning and have caused isolated and localized damaging floods, as well as significant wind damage.
In particular, in Seneca County, an agricultural tourism event was disrupted and extensive damage was recorded to many or most of the vendors on site.
In light of this and many other similar circumstances, we encourage the public to sign up for NY–Alert weather reports on their computers and smartphones at nyalert.gov/home.aspx.
Also, please familiarize yourself with the information on the NY EDEN website regarding Severe Summer storms and share this information widely; visit eden.cce.cornell.edu/disasters/Pages/SevereSummerStorms.aspx.
Specifically for agriculture, consider hosting Farm Disaster Preparedness clinics.
