(Oneida, NY- July 2013) Several not for profit agencies are working together to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act on Friday, July 26 at 10 a.m. at the Kallet Civic Center, Main Street in Oneida.
The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) was signed by President George Bush on July 26, 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
“The ADA has increased awareness and had an impact on our lives in many ways,” said Jennifer Lea, Independent Living Advocate for Arise. “There really aren’t many places you can go to today and not see evidence of the ADA. Just look at entrances of local businesses and you will see ramps, automatic door openers, drinking fountains that are lower, and the list just keeps growing.”
“When accessibility issues are addressed by our community what we are saying is everyone is welcome here.” said Christine Sears, director of development and PR for Madison Cortland ARC. “ARC is so proud to be a part of this event!”
The celebration will include comments from local, state, and federal dignitaries, followed by a balloon launch and a march around the City of Oneida. Information on tax credits for making businesses accessible will be available at the ADA Celebration.
Arise, Inc., Madison Cortland ARC, Liberty Resources, Community Action Program, Heritage Farm, Office for the Aging in Madison County, and Bridges Council on Alcoholism are all working together on this event.
The public is invited to attend and share in this celebration.
