Madison County Emergency Radio Project Complete
Madison County E-911 Communications Center Director Paul Hartnett announced Aug. 20 that the county’s emergency communications upgrade is complete. He said the county is moving forward with its original plans to offer space on its towers to technology-based businesses that may benefit from expanding their services here.
“The $23 million upgrade to our emergency communication system is complete,” Hartnett said. “In the course of this upgrade, an opportunity for cellular and related businesses becomes apparent through the co-location of their equipment on any of more than a dozen new and existing towers. We expect this ‘turn-key’ technological infrastructure will be a boon for the right forward-thinking business.”
According to the Hartnett, Madison County is geographically challenged, requiring intense attention to engineering a tower system that circumnavigates physical barriers to coverage in the county.
“We believe improving digital service coverage – cellular, Wi-Fi and other applications – could kick-start growth here, as well as boost the right company’s bottom line,” Hartnett said. “Ostensibly, if wireless Internet access became more widely available, it would only enhance the county’s tax base, helping to reduce property tax burdens, and provide a loyal customer base by improving the quality of life for those who choose to make Madison County their home or place of business – people who have been underserved in the technological arena for too long.”
Hartnett said the right partnership would be a win for the business, county and residents.
The UHF Simulcast system consists of 13 sites throughout the county with microwave connectivity between the sites and four adjoining counties, Hartnett said.
“At this time, the county is actively marketing tower space to all interested wireless carriers for expansion and build-out of their networks,” Hartnett said.
